For Parents & Teachers

In a world that relies so heavily on the Internet for many, many purposes, it is vital that we teach our children how to stay safe online. There is a huge amount of non-fiction available for children to read around the subject of esafety, but there is little fiction for younger children.

Whilst being a beautifully-illustrated, fun and rhyme-driven story for 5-7 year olds, PENGUINPIG has a strong underlying message that we need to think carefully before we trust what we read online. It enforces the message that some people use the Internet to trick others and that, in the event of being uncertain, children should check with a trusted adult.

Author & Illustrator

Stuart Spendlow is a Primary School teacher from Lincolnshire who loves anything musical, anything technological and biscuits. He plays the piano and the drums (but not at the same time) and he enjoys swimming. He also loves crawling on the floor with his little girl, even though she does pull his hair and scratch his face quite a lot!

Whilst looking for good e-safety resources for schools to use, Stuart noticed that very few fictional stories for young children existed. This was very disappointing so he had the idea of writing one that helped teach children to stay safe online. But he'd never done anything like that before...

He started by drafting down some very scruffy ideas. His writing wasn't neat and his drawings were terrible - but he started to see what the story would look like. So, he did some neater versions and got in touch with Amy Bradley, the illustrator.

Amy works from a lovely 3rd floor Studio in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire. She loves her job very much and says hours (or days) whizz by when she drawing! She also loves anything that involves spending time with her friends, seeing the world, and chocolate (of course!)

Stuart then spent several months re-drafting the story, tweaking words and sentences until he finally had a version that he loved. He put it away in a drawer for a week and then read it to see if he still liked it. He proof read it carefully to make sure there were no silly mistakes!

During this time, Amy started to draw characters and plans based on what Stuart had told her. She did an amazing job and Stuart immediately loved the penguinpig! She carried on creating backgrounds, developing characters and adding the beautiful colours that you see in the final version.

More months went by and the book started to take shape - pages were completed, characters finalised and a front cover designed. And, eventually, PENGUINPIG was ready to be released to everyone!

Stuart and Amy absolutely love PENGUINPIG (but of course they're going to!) and they hope that you have great fun reading it.
